"Джазовая Провинция"

(Владимир, Брянск, Орел, Тула, Белгород, Липецк, Воронеж)

Also, we had a talk (for the second time! See our first interview in EnglishMag 4Q/2018) we with an unusual guest of the festival Steve Kershaw.
He is not only a perfect bass player but also an education representative.
– So you are an Oxford professor, how do you manage to…
– *laughing. Apparently, from having a flexible schedule. I’ve been teaching people online. I teach Greek and Roman history – ancient Greece, ancient Rome, Latin and Greek languages, Greek mythology, – the Greek and Roman classics.
–  Who of the musicians had the biggest impact on you?
– I think, the great bass player Ray Brown, he had a big influence right in the start. I think he was playing the base (уст. ; = bass) with Oskar Petersen. He did the things I could not even imagine you could do on a bass.
–  For how long do you play the bass?
– I`ve been playing the bass since I was 14 years old, so it`s about 45 years.
– Do you play any other instruments?
–  I play bass guitar, but that`s sort of the same thing. Nothing else, really – I play the piano very badly.
– What other styles do you like?
– Classic rock. When I was a teenager, –  it was a middle of the 70`s, so I grew up with Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, and those of the classic British rock bands, but I still really love listening to that. I like the blues as well, also classical music too, contemporary classic, you know, –  strange stuff.
–  Which traits of character should a musician get rid of? What spoils everything?
– Self-doubt, I think. It’s the thing all musicians suffer from –  you know, we all hate ourselves.

– What do you need to make it disappear?
–  Just a support of other musicians, support of the audience –  we all need to look after ourselves. But! I think that self-doubt is what helps us to get better, because we always want to move beyond where we are now.
– What do you think you need to create a good band?
– It`s all about both a musical connection and a personal one. It`s possible to play very good music with people who you don`t like, but it doesn’t help you. You need to have a common purpose, all of the musicians need to want to get to the same place musically; sometimes we think we should go on different roots to get there. So the main thing is to get together a group of friends. Sometimes, to create musical chemistry you only need a nice conversation while sitting around the table. If the conversation flows freely, everyone is excited swapping ideas – that`s how you create a beautiful conversation in jazz.
– You have already been to Voronezh before. How do you like the city?
– I really like this city. It seems to be a dynamic city with its own life, I always like the people here, – the people, who support jazz province and are really enthusiastic and helpful. For me, the whole city is a big attractive picture, – a really interesting place with interesting people.
– Thank you.
– My pleasure.

Eva Cassidy – Autumn leaves

Autumn leaves
The falling leaves drift by my window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sunburned hand I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all, my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sunburned hand I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all, my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall
